JJ’s Way of Holding
JJ is a full-spectrum birthworker who tends people across the whole arc of reproductive life: preconception, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, loss, and the long in-between. Clients describe her as steady, warm, unhurried, and unafraid of what arises. She brings body literacy, herbal knowledge, and a wide toolkit of ceremonial and somatic practices, and the throughline of her work is presence over protocol.
Her orientation is whole-story. When someone arrives at any threshold, a positive test, a loss, a postpartum spiral, an unexpected diagnosis, she is holding the full arc, not just the moment. The body’s design is what she works with. Her job is to help build the conditions it needs and to witness what is already underway.
JJ practices from inside specific lineages, and naming them is part of the work. Her foundational practitioner formation includes the full-spectrum birthwork training of Reclaim Our Birth Power Academy, the bio-spiritual teachings of The Red Tent (Sage Femme Womb), pelvic and womb bodywork through Evolving the Art of Touch, the Mesoamerican womb care of Indigemama’s Matriz y Concha, and the Black Southern midwifery and herbalism of Divine Birth Wisdom. She continues her practitioner study with The Holy Well’s Institute of Liberation Medicine.
Most of the families JJ has walked with have been Black, Latine, and multiracial, a reflection of how the practice has organically unfolded and of the lineages her training comes from. She welcomes people who are looking for the kind of care the dominant model doesn’t make room for: unhurried presence, body literacy, and someone who holds the whole story, not just the moment. If you don’t yet have language for what you’re looking for but something here resonates, that’s enough to begin.
My Writing & Audio Practice
My writing lives at @jaontra on Substack: two publications, both moving toward audio as the primary form. Womb Wounds & Wisdom is for those tending their own reproductive and personal thresholds. Tending Thresholds is for the practitioners, parents, elders, and leaders holding others through theirs.
JJ is also FSB’s founder. For the fuller story of the work and the containers that hold it: About the Founder.
